Again, quietly and despite the months of pandemic, Matanzas beekeepers widely exceed their production plan for more than 12 consecutive years and are going for more.

Matanzas exceed annual honey production plan and continue for more
14 Dec 2021

The fact of reaching more than 1,804 tons means a great achievement in this difficult year of 2021, where transhumance and apiary care collided with the strict restrictions of the Covid 19 pandemic. Similarly to this, the plans for wax exceeded, with 30 thousand 690 kilograms, and propolis, with one thousand 454, and for queen bees they achieved 23 thousand 900. The most prominent municipalities in this work were Pedro Betancourt, Perico and Los Arabos. At the same time, five beekeepers stand out as the most comprehensive in the province, exceeding 100 kilograms per hive, a meter instituted by the yumurinos in 2019. They are Ángel Luis García, from the municipality of Los Arabos; José Iván Dueñas, from Perico; Inocente Almeida García, from Jovellanos; Alexis Fariñas, from Jagüey Grande, and Rogelio Marcelo Fundora, from Pedro Betancourt, the latter with an average of more than 162 kilograms per hive. It is also news that in the month of November, Matanzas beekeepers set a new production record for one month, obtaining more than 295 tons of nectar. Currently in the province of Matanzas there are 24 thousand 459 hives, for one hundred percent of its capacity, which maintains it as a benchmark in the country for the significant contribution in freely convertible currency. Historically, honey from bees is quoted on the international market above 2,000 euros per ton. The national plan for the production of honey from bees amounts to 10,300 tons and to date it is struggling to reach the 1,300 that are missing. The provinces of Matanzas, Camagüey, Las Tunas and Mayabeque, already compliant, provide the extra for this objective.
