Speaking in the VII regular session of the National Assembly of People's Power in its IX Legislature, he highlighted the actions developed in the country to confront the pandemic, with several milestones in the anti-SARS-CoV vaccination campaign. 2. He said that after five intense months of this process, at the end of October 23, 25 million 330 thousand 666 doses had been applied, and close to the total of the vaccinable population had received at least the first dose of some of the national immunogens. "At the end of that day, in Cuba the percentage of people practically doubled, with respect to the total population, who had started their vaccination scheme in relation to the world," he said. Portal Miranda added that "the rate of vaccination in our country has allowed us to lead the indicator with the highest proportion of daily doses applied per 100 inhabitants for more than two months, with a daily average of about 250 thousand vaccines." He added that the Antillean nation also tops the list of countries with the highest number of schemes started, ranking second, behind Portugal. "Regarding the completed scheme, the Island is among the first 15 nations in the world with 71.6 percent of the population completely immunized," he said. He also referred to the pediatric vaccination campaign that began on September 3, which he classified as unprecedented as Cuba is the only one that has been able to massively vaccinate its youngest, since they were two years old. The headline pointed out that the results that distinguish the country today are proof of how much it has done to win the battle against a disease that does not discriminate in its devastating action against human beings. "Since the beginning of 2021, the Cuban epidemiological context was distinguished by a sustained growth of cases, until reaching the highest figures of the entire epidemic in August, with the highest numbers for a day being verified on the 23rd, with 9,907 infections", he pointed out. Portal Miranda recalled that from April to September two variants of the virus prevailed, the Beta and the Delta, and in just three months the last of them became the predominant one, and at this time it continues to be the one that prevails. He pointed out that on September 20 the accelerated decline in active cases began, and on October 17, 8,261 were reported, which meant a reduction of 32,723, in 27 days; that is, 75 percent fewer patients admitted. According to the minister, in the course of the last year the network of Molecular Biology laboratories has continued to expand until reaching all the provinces and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, and currently there are 27 institutions of this type, with capacity to process 25 thousand PCR tests daily. He affirmed that at the center of everything we do is the political will of the Party and the Government to put people's health first, which has had as an essential premise a government management based on the use of science, as well as the prevention and anticipation of risks to the disease, to minimize its incidence among the Cuban population. He highlighted that in response to the health emergency, at this stage a portfolio has been created with 27 products developed by the BioCubaFarma companies: four immunomodulators; three antivirals; three anti-inflammatory drugs; three vaccines approved for emergency use and two vaccine candidates, still in clinical trial; four serological diagnosticians; four molecular diagnosticians; and four medical teams. “Of the total number of products, 18 have the Emergency Use Authorization granted by the Cuban Regulatory Authority; nine are in the development process and 22 are in production scaling, ”he explained. Portal Miranda said that the work of the scientists has made it possible to have Cuban swabs and culture media, allowing a wide diagnostic coverage in the country. He said that in this period, more than 170 pulmonary ventilators (in the photo) produced by the industry and its Neuroscience Center have been used, which have helped in the care of seriously ill patients, in addition to the fact that the Center for Advanced Studies of Cuba has created Nanotechnological inputs widely used by Molecular Biology laboratories. “Among the drugs developed by the country most used and with highly efficient results, the interferons stand out: HeberFERON, Heberon (recombinant human interferon alfa 2b) and Nasalferon, whose early use has prevented most patients from progressing to severe stages of the disease, ”he explained. The use of artificial intelligence to evaluate radiological examinations and chest CT scans for the diagnosis of pneumonia from COVID-19 infection has also been the result of research carried out with the assistance of several scientific centers. According to the head of the Minsap, of vital importance have been the studies associated with the behavior of the disease in pediatric ages, patients with a survival that exceeds 99.9 percent. He also highlighted the interdisciplinary and multicenter work carried out during the confrontation with the epidemic are computer solutions. He concluded that "the world will not be the same after this pandemic, neither will Cuba, and learning to live with the disease is a challenge for everyone that must be assumed with great intelligence and patience."
