The Ecomic de Las Tunas plant, the second of its kind in the country, is in its final assembly phase, with technology capable of generating biofertilizers that counteract pests and incorporate nutrients to crops, replacing those of chemical origin. The investment is particularly valuable in this eastern province, where 80% of the soils are rated fair to poor. Reydenis González Céspedes, president of the Calixto Sarduy agricultural production cooperative (CPA) of the capital city, where the plant is built, explained to the media that its capacity per year will exceed 30 tons. He specified that a kilogram of Ecomic can benefit a quintal of grains, in addition to its contribution to the health of sweet potato, cassava, tomato and pasture seeds. The Ecomic has its essence in the existence of fungi that coexist in symbiosis with the roots of plants, and its use shows an increase in the absorption of nutrients, mainly phosphorus and nitrogen, increasing the productivity of crops. Specialists have shown its excellent results in various species such as beans, corn, banana, tobacco and rice, and it is an excellent option to substitute imports. Although the CPA Calixto Sarduy has as its main corporate purpose the development of livestock, in the more than 1,104 hectares that make it up, areas are dedicated to various crops and the production of earthworm humus, for self-sufficiency and commercialization with other cooperatives. The start-up of the plant guides the territorial strategy of diversifying the obtaining of bioproducts in the different productive forms.
