With the 332 tons (t) that have already been achieved, Pinar del Río reaches the highest honey production to this date in the last 30 years. Ismelis Bárbaro Prieto Acanda, director of the Base Business Unit (UEB) Apícola de Vueltabajo, assures that since 1990, the volumes that have been recorded throughout 2021, in honeys, waxes and other lines, have not been obtained. Even though this year there are five months of work remaining, the official indicates that the 2020 production was already exceeded, when 327 t were achieved. "This means that we will have significant growth," he adds. In total, he estimates that it could reach about 600 t. For Prieto Acanda, this is due to the good weather conditions and the years that an intense hurricane does not affect the territory, which has allowed the forests to recover. "Now the mangroves and the Guanahacabibes peninsula are reaching their potential, thanks to the truce that nature has given them," he explains. Apart from the climate, the manager highlights the assurance of the key inputs to form the hives and activate the transport that allows their movement from the mountain to the coast, following the different blooms. "Another fundamental factor has been the three queen bees that we have in the province, certified by the Institute of Apicultural Research, which give us the possibility of obtaining quality specimens and the timely change of these in the hives." The manager details that Pinar del Río has 45 honey producers distributed in its 11 municipalities, and that there are a total of 12,000 hives. This is a figure very close to the maximum potential of the territory, taking into account its surface and its vegetation, which is 12 164. Prieto Acanda assures that this confirms the recovery that the sector has had in recent years, after the severe blow caused by the arrival of the special period and the repeated scourge of several hurricanes.
