Maisí for food safety

Meats are problem solved. So it is not "problem". Pork, sheep and rabbit meat barely touched 0.6 pounds per capita per month at the end of 2020; it should be five kilograms. In 2021 they plan to achieve one kilogram, still short. They plan to achieve food sovereignty, and meat within it, of course, in 2026. That is the problem.

It is the municipal food security program in the municipality of Maisí. According to the purpose of the 30 pounds, not including meat, the different forms of production in this town (agricultural almost by definition) must come to contribute monthly, for each of the 28,724 Mayans, 15 pounds of meats, 10 of vegetables, two of grains and three of fruits

Such evidence showed Venceremos the delegate of Agriculture in the municipality, Noel Mosqueda Mosqueda, and the coordinator of Food programs and objectives in the Council of the Administration of the town, Jorge Luis Sánchez Terán. Danny Matos Bravet, technical-productive director of the Maisí Agricultural Company, also accompanied the journalists on a tour of productive forms of the town. The contribution by and for each maisiense.

The program includes the planting, production and commercialization of the universe of products of the earth there. They now attend to requests to deliver 73 hectares of idle or poorly exploited land to usufructuaries, and later another 80 for coffee cultivation.

In reality, its breadth also pays attention to the contribution made by the residents of the communities from their patios and family plots, currently 549, significantly in Boca de Jauco and Punta de Maisí, which expand their sheep-goat herds.

Another reference is the community of La Güira del Diamante, of the Cantillo popular council, which is self-sufficient in vegetables, they explain. In El Cayo, from the Vertientes council, they consolidate the sale of eggs to the population, from producers who received semi-rustic breeding stock, and the marketing of viands and vegetables. Sabana, from the homonymous popular council, and Casimba, from the municipal seat of La Maquina, also promote livestock modules in productive forms aimed at satisfying specific social objectives, such as the home of grandparents, people with disabilities, gastronomy and tourism. The dining rooms of the Family Attention System are linked to productive units where Commerce buys directly.

The program also contemplates the contributions of the territory in its traditionally exportable agricultural lines, such as coffee, the two tourist facilities and local social consumption and the demand for agricultural food in the provincial capital.

The plantations of cassava, yams, taro and plantain achieved what was planned at the end of last year. More than 100 tons of these products were harvested, but much less taro (despite the 288 hectares planted), which was greatly affected by the drought and the lack of industrial fertilizers.

“Only 70 percent of the hiring was achieved. Under these conditions, planting tends to decrease, and this year about 200 hectares should be sown ”, the managers agree. The purpose is to conserve the seeds and produce less than 200 tons of the tuber between May and August.

Fifty advanced producers have assigned priority destinations for their crops. The collection and marketing routes cover each popular council, community and points of sale. It is necessary to introduce more species of high genetic value, promote mini-industries, nurseries of vegetables, fruit trees, local development projects, new crops ... Maisí continues to illuminate the goal of its food sovereignty.
