The freshly painted fence welcomes you. At mid-morning the sun punishes the earth and the body, but Escambray finds everyone in the furrow: in the tomato fields —at harvest peak—, in the organic farm where Romelia and Juana give no respite to the grass, in the covered farm houses that Noel cares for with zeal… For these peasants from the Cooperativa de Producción Agropecuaria (CPA) 13 de Marzo, from Trinidad, hope sprouts and bears its first fruits. Always affable, Minervino Rodríguez González is waiting today at the office; the cloth hat on one side of the bureau and the thermos of coffee on the other. When the director was proposed to him, he knew that the cooperative was hitting rock bottom due to low production levels, the debt with the bank, the apathy of the associates and the possibility of even disintegrating it. But peasant at last, he never gives up. This time, too, he was right; The first thing was to convince the 58 associates that so many burdens could be left behind. Then plow hectares and more hectares, sow and not neglect the harvest, build the cultivation houses again, organize the cattle activity, revive the organoponic. To achieve this, he had the support of the Delegation of Agriculture in the municipality and the direction of the National Association of Small Farmers. Of the 597 hectares of the productive base, 485 are dedicated to livestock and 143 hectares to various crops. After concluding the mass purification process, they have around 229 heads in favorable conditions, which allows them to exceed the milk plan, as well as the sale of 2.6 tons of meat, of the 1.6 foreseen in the plan. The contribution of viands and vegetables also exceeds the commitments and is among the cooperatives in the territory that manages to market their productions after complying with the state order and self-sufficiency, as another source of income. Today there are other airs that this CPA located in the area of ??La Paloma and blessed by fertile lands wears. "In greeting to the 45th anniversary, the socio-administrative premises, the Marti square, the workers' social circle have been painted, and the livestock module for raising pigs, sheep-goats and rabbits will also be inaugurated," the president of the Board of Directors enthuses. . BETTER FINANCIAL SITUATION The enormous hat, which reaches almost to her shoulders, does not allow Romelia Mendoza's face to be seen clearly. But when Escambray investigates, she raises her head and takes a breath: “Here there was hardly any production and we couldn't even count on the advance payment; there was no encouragement at all. But now everything is different. In the organoponic we have chili, chard, garlic, leek, lettuce, beet and with very good sales levels. When necessary, we go to the tomato to help with the harvest and we earn a little more”, she comments with familiarity. Her work partner, Juana Rondón Quesada, covers her sun-tanned skin. “Today we guataque and tomorrow we weed; the hardest thing is when you have to peck at the ground. It's hard work, but I like it and even more so now that we are paid well, ”she says, excited as well. They —like the rest of the peasants— have been aware of the accounts and the seriousness with which the CPA settles its debts with the bank. Of the 2 million pesos for aged credits, more than half has already been paid and the rest was favored with the financial treatment foreseen among the 63 measures put into force by the Ministry of Agriculture in Cuba.
