Used in Cuba as beach walkways, pergolas, sills, perimeter fences, wall veneers, pallets, platforms and bridges, it can be admired mostly in tourist centers of the country with high demand, such as the Varadero spa, in the western province of Matanzas. . With this first step, the private sector made its debut in foreign trade, when the first export efforts came true with a shipment of this material, made from plastic waste. Thus the first export of this sector in the territory was achieved, confirmed to Cuba International the self-employed engineer Pavel Sánchez, in charge of the project called Ecomadera Cubana. In December 2020, the first export of 24 tons of plastic wood was made to the Dominican Republic valued at about 13 thousand dollars. "With the signing of our first export contract through the trading company BK Import-Export, the country incorporates to its export portfolio a product with high added value, backed by technological innovation," he stressed. It is produced with recycled material, which benefits the environment by preventing the felling of trees, the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and being more durable than natural wood, he pointed out. It is only made in Sancti Spíritus, in a workshop located in the area of ??El Colorado, in the municipality of Cabaiguán, as part of a project that integrates various forms of non-state management and is incorporated into the productive chain with state entities. The technological process includes collection, selection by type of plastic, crushing and washing. All the machines involved are handcrafted, designed and built by the project's innovators. "It is used fundamentally in construction and after this first export of processed profiles, a path of collaboration opens up due to the growing interest of the nations of the area in our productions," he assured. So far our flagship product is the beach runway, he stressed. Sánchez explained that the initiative arose in 2014, when he and Mr. Yoel Torres began to make synthetic wood with waste from the production of the Cooperativa non-Agropecuaria La Esperanza. After several months of research and testing, on March 21, 2015, they managed to industrially produce the material, whose trade name is Ecomadera Cubana. After being transformed into columns, beams, joists, boards and other elements of plastic wood, as requested by clients, they collect utility in works that benefit Tourism. The productions also reach other economic sectors of the country, particularly in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Santiago de Cuba, he added. We maintain close alliances with educational centers and institutions committed to caring for the environment such as the National Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, he commented. Each of the actions are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the National Plan for Economic and Social Development of Cuba until that year, he concluded.
