Ana Julia Rondón Castillo, head of the project promoted by the Academy's Center for Biotechnological Studies, located in this city, told the ACN that it is currently in the selection phase of candidate strains based on their effect on pathogenic microorganisms. . As explained by the also biologist and doctor in veterinary sciences, bees are susceptible to bacteria, mites, fungi, and viruses, which are not treated with antibiotics or chemical substances, hence when large infestations occur, hives are burned. . Our project, with a duration of four years, aims to help reduce the rate of diseases in bees and the burning of colonies, in order to guarantee pollination and care for the environment, in addition to increasing the production of honey for exportable purposes. , he emphasized. Rondón Castillo said that another edge is related to the sociocultural and historical study of the development of beekeeping in the western territory, particularly the participation of women in that economic activity that generates jobs and benefits for society, the environment, and the economy. Among the participating institutions are the Apiculture Company and the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas, as well as professors from the Agrarian University of Havana, as part of the initiative supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA). The Center for Biotechnology Studies is responsible for the creation of different products such as the zootechnical additives Vitafert, Probiolev, Probiolactil and Subtilprobio, with promising results to improve animal health, as a contribution to food production and import substitution.
