In the largest Cuban province, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) today prioritizes the policy for the use of genetically modified organisms and thus promote agriculture and food sovereignty.

Armando Rodríguez, vice minister of the sector in exchange with specialists and experts from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, assured that this region is a pioneer in the activity thanks to its potential for research, development, production, use, import and export of also known like GMO. A Commission of scientists is at the forefront of this activity in conjunction with various government entities to ensure strict compliance with the standards established by international organizations that regulate activities of this type. In statements to the Internet portal of Radio Cadena Agramonte, Rodríguez specified that "this policy addresses a technological issue and it must be seen in the complexity in which it is valued." The manager also ruled on the need to give full prominence to the producer "who is the one who produces that seed, which in the case of Cuba is the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB)." The endorsement and control of the Ministries of Agriculture and Health are crucial in this type of research schedule. "The presence of experts in this team will guarantee that the decisions taken are collegial, based on science and technology, and the presence of researchers from the social sciences is also necessary," the deputy minister insisted. The Cuban economy, especially the programs related to food production, has in this province with 16 thousand square kilometers, one of its main pillars, in line with the fulfillment of the 2030 development agenda.
