The visit, more than to share and celebrate with the mountain people the 34th anniversary of the creation of the Turquino Plan, on June 2, 1987, constituted an exhortation to increase the productions that guarantee the sustainability and development of these hills. With coffee, bananas and taro as leading products, more than 25 thousand tons of food were marketed through the state route from the mountains of Granma at the end of 2020, a figure that is far from the enormous productive potential of this mountainous massif. Hence the insistence of comrade Federico Hernández Hernández, during the tour, to outline the productive strategies that lead to maximum use of the benefits of this narrow geography, based on local self-sufficiency and subsequent contribution to the agri-food development of the province and the country. . One of the first concerns of the visitors was the current state of the road networks of these mountains, essential for the transfer of products and merchandise, that is why among the sites visited was the Mountain Paths Unit based in the community of The Mercedes. There they learned that this year in Granma some 78 kilometers of difficult-to-access roads will go into maintenance, more than 65% of the plan conceived for this entity in the year. In the San Lorenzo area, they spoke with workers from commerce and agriculture, two entities whose basic infrastructures must be more adjusted to the new measures implemented by the country to boost our economy and society. Today the term to be used in agriculture is not that of agricultural worker but that of producer in the maximum extension of the word, the Governor of Granma Francisco Escribano emphasized in one of his interventions, so we must banish obsolete mentalities in these forms of production that are not erased with a brush or with the simple fact of a law. This is achieved, he said, with a lot of training, extensionism and the application of new technologies associated with new ways of facing productive commitments. In the community of Juana, a place that serves as an ascent to the highlands of Caracas, Limones and Derecha, the managers exchanged with mountain residents, among them the peasant Esther Pacheco Guerra, on whose plot she has established some 2,000 pineapple plants, which they allow each year to exceed 60 quintals of the queen of fruits and that many times lost due to lack of marketing. There, the solutions to this problem that could generate for this country woman, just for this concept, an annual income of more than 45 thousand pesos were agreed. The last site of the Masoense Turquino Plan that was visited on June 2 by the highest political and governmental figures of Granma was the community of La Habanita, a mountain settlement historically known for its productive contributions and that today is far from its best moments. The fundamental reason is the malfunction of its production base, the CPA Desembarco del Granma, which had only 6 workers and was on the verge of being extinguished. Fortunately, a new board of directors recently assumed the commitment to advance it so that it continues to be the fundamental embryo of the development of producers, associates and residents of La Habanita. On June 2, on the southern slope of the municipality of Pilón, communities of the Plan Turquino were visited as part of the celebration of the 34th anniversary of the Comprehensive Development Program of our mountains.
