Matanzas beekeepers are established as the best in the country
The base business unit (UEB) Apícola de Matanzas received for the first time in its history the flag that accredits it as National Vanguard, the highest emulative category granted by the Central of Cuban Workers (CTC), a condition that consecrates beekeepers Matanzas as the best in the country.
The conjugation of optimal economic and union results earned the UEB to be the only one of its kind on the Island to receive the high stimulus, as a consequence of a 2019 where they registered the production record of 2025, 5 tons (t) of honey of bee.
Lázaro Bruno García Castro, general director of the Beekeeping Company, based in Havana, pondered the sustained performance of the Matanzas collective, leader in the contributions of this product, which together with tobacco and coal, is part of the trio of lines that today more the Ministry of Agriculture exports.
Jesús Falcón Sotolongo, director of the UEB, attributed obtaining the National Vanguard category to efficient technical-beekeeping management, attention to the 118 primary producers, their efforts and the union's performance. "All these elements led us to achieve a magnificent 2019," he said.
Falcón Sotolongo praised the economic behavior of the current stage, where they have faced adversities related to the drought extended from last October to April of this year, a climatic factor accompanied by severe restrictions on the allocation of fuels (in the first quarter only the 32 percent), an essential resource for technical management, maintenance of the species and transhumance.
As a trend, explained the manager, July, August and September are the months with the lowest yields in the UEB, due to continuous rains, with an incidence on blooms and an increase in the humidity of honeys, above 20, which that causes the fermentation of the sweetener defendant.
Despite these factors, the thousand 470 tons of conventional honey from 2020 are going at a very good pace, judging by the 942, 3 tons achieved at the end of the first quarter, much more than expected for that stage, also achieved overcompliances in wax and propolis.
