Cuban agriculture must secure more than a thousand tons of medicinal plants in 2022
According to the Ministry of Agriculture on its website, this year Cuban agriculture must ensure a total demand of 1,498 tons, of which 725 are destined for the Local Production Centers (CPL), 422 for Labiofam and 351 for BioCubaFarma.
The use of medicinal plant species as a therapeutic alternative has been practiced in our country for 20 years with the endorsement of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Since 1977, this international organization has been recommending to governments their rational use based on the criteria of efficacy, safety and quality of medicinal preparations. According to the Ministry of Agriculture on its website, this year Cuban agriculture must ensure a total demand of 1,498 tons, of which 725 are destined for the Local Production Centers (CPL), 422 for Labiofam and 351 for BioCubaFarma. , with the delivery of 48 medicinal plants, of which 21 are cultivated, 17 are collected wild, and 10 are acquired commercially. The commercial term is for those crops such as garlic, onion, orange, among others that are not they sow in the units and are bought from other entities. Based on the manual of Good Agricultural and Collection Practices, recently prepared by a multidisciplinary group of prestigious institutions such as Actaf, Cecmed, Cence, Cidem and producers of medicinal plants in the country, the quality of these products will be guaranteed, and will allow certification of our productions by the governing bodies, adds the Minag publication. Cuba has 142 units of medicinal plants, of which 11 are from mountains, attached to agricultural companies belonging to different OSDE, with a total of 449 cultivable hectares, in which a total of 769 workers work. The Ministry of Agriculture is the rector of the production of medicinal plants in Cuba, productions that in recent years have increased considerably from the economic situation that the country presents, as the purchase of both medicines for human use becomes more deficit such as for veterinary use.
